I have seen that people commonly use it to express admiration but it is not a possitive comment due to the fact that you always degrade one of the compared objects... and commonly it goes for the compared guy.
But that's just it. You're basically telling the artist that he/she is not creative and only took ideas from someone else. If you tell a girl she's pretty, you're not comparing her with the supermodel of the day either. So, why do it with art?
I'm all for stopping the fad of idiotic comments, and I think the 'oh it reminds me of..' is quite frustrating to deal with, but I do agree with bachterman's point
Most of the designs/story have to be based on an existing set of existing culture/preconception for it to work. (example: Santa originally was not a fat man in red until CocaCola comes along, and now if you point at a scrawny guy in green and say its Santa noone would buy it). Of course you would want to make whatever you're drawing unique, but for it to actually work theres always something that audience can 'recognize', in a way. Kids just happen to recognize it as their favourite shows or games because they lack experience in real world. And you know how many of those are on dA
tl;dr: ideas dont just magically appear 'for the first time', they gradually evolve. Like Pokemanz.
they made santa from ODIN the asgard god, funny thought, just mentioned it ^^
i understand the feelings of the artist, nicely done to tell it with a picture, but i don't think the matter is worth a frustrating thought... just let this kids talk, they always do, and the fun thing about it, they even like your art more when they can compare it to something they already know
Hey man fuck these plebs. Their opinion means next to nothing at the end of the day it comes down to you and your art and how happy you feel about it. No need for the mass appeal ya cant please everyone
I don't think most of "them peoples" aim to offend your originality, in my humble opinion your art is pretty original and unique in its own right. Alas some of the new generation of humans have found substitute for rational thinking - speaking by association.

You shouldn't take them too seriously, I'm pretty sure they don't even mean it.
with respect, who cares about some dumbass kids' cursory impressions of your art? LOTS of people are interested in your art. many of them will be superficial. the sheer breadth of interest ensures that some of the attention will be negative and shallow. to put things in perspective, this one anti dumb commenter piece of yours has more comments than all serious works of mine combined. sometimes it's hard to tell if you appreciate it at all. personally, i'd love to get more feedback of any kind. was it ever like that for you? not tryin to piss you off, but a lot of people are fools. it doesn't matter, you can't change it and there's no reason to take it personal. i agree it sucks to be ignorantly misinterpreted, but it sucks much worse to be ignored. you're lucky and talented, don't get spoiled.
Saw this on your FB, I didn't want to make this comment there because of clax's beauteous rant. I felt like I would be shitting on it and get some hate. I can't speak for everyone obviously. But if/when I make a comment like, "reminds me of...", most of the time I mean it as a compliment. It is hard to come up with new ideas, and without knowing back story in the art my mind gravitates towards something that an image reminds me of. Usually they are things I think a previous similar IP has done well. When I say it, I guess what I should be saying is "I like what you did with..." So that is my bad, I need to stop being so lazy in my praise.
That being said, I have a story I am trying to put together and always get, "sounds like Highlander.". So I know the frustration lol. I guess it has a lot to do with the overall tone of the comment.
Hey man, thanks for commenting. Eloquently put and I completely get it. My beef is never with someone's compliment, it's with the need for people to outwardly compare things. Sometimes it's as if they pretend I forgot something similar existed. Some comments like that are single words like "MGS" or "Warframe?" (just to use the ones I put in the comic) and it's infuriating. Imagine going to an artist's gallery show and walking up to him or her and blurting out "hey, looks like Alphonse Mucha" and then walking away. That's what those comments feel like online. Just venting
